The lowly cell is a symphony of reactions all going on at different rates. Enzymes are simply molecules that adjust rates of reactions so they are compatible. In other words, energy would be produced in a cell without the involved enzymes but at a rate that was so slow it would not allow the cell to function. Both of these things, structure and kinetics, exist at the bottom of potential energy wells. A vast surface with potholes.
