Weeds

Filed under: Uncategorized — unrealnature @ 6:58 am

A weed is any plant growing where it is not wanted.

In the gardens of the mind, weeds are called ‘stupid,’ ‘dumb,’ ‘pointless,’ ‘boring; ‘hot air.’

For me, the technical details and comparisons of cameras and lenses are weeds. HDR, picture-a-day, book-in-a-month, printer specs, nudes in unnatural places, cute anything … weeds, weeds, weeds.

For many people, history of photography, philosophy of photography, digital anything, discussions about meaning, the word “image”, the word “art”, the word “think”, are weeds, weeds, weeds.

No problem. Weeds are not defined by what they are but by their wanted-ness. One person’s hot air is another person’s prized obsession.

Just remember that there are quite a few people out there for whom the entire field of photography is a weed in the garden of their  mind. The moment you show them one non-utilitarian photograph or say one non-utilitarian word about a picture: “pretty”, or “nice,” for example, you’re generating hot air; you are putting weeds in their  garden.

  1. I like that a lot.

I’ve always been drawn to weed gardens in physical relity, and my mind is a tangled profusion of the buggers. Of course I like it a lot… :-)

  2. Felix,

Weed gardens, or weedy gardens? I have the latter.

Congratulations on your Guild Gallery show. I enjoyed the videos.

  6. Yes and no. If your yin yang is Krebs cycling that simply indicates a certain wishywashy-ness. Be decisive! Yin or yang?

  8. And thank you for telling me who stole my cycle. I shall call on Krebs tomorrow to discuss its return.
